What Colour Card is SMSTS?

In the construction industry, qualifications and certifications are key to proving your competency on-site. One of the most common questions we hear from those considering the SMSTS course is: what colour CSCS card does it get you? But it actually doesn’t get you CSCS certification. In today’s blog, we’ll be looking at the requirements for getting CSCS cards.

What Colour Card is SMSTS?

The SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) is a highly respected course that equips site managers and supervisors with the knowledge needed to manage health and safety on-site. However, SMSTS is not a recognised qualification for a CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card on its own. The CSCS card scheme is largely based on NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) levels and specific role-based competence.

So, while SMSTS is extremely valuable in demonstrating your commitment to health and safety management, it doesn’t qualify you for any specific colour CSCS card by itself.

How Do You Get a CSCS Card?

To obtain a CSCS card, you’ll typically need to complete a relevant NVQ in construction. For instance, a Level 3 or Level 4 NVQ, when combined with a valid CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test, will usually qualify you for a Gold Supervisory Card. Higher-level NVQs, like Level 6 or 7, are commonly linked to the Black Manager Card, which is often required for site managers.

While it doesn’t directly get you a CSCS card, many employers expect site managers to hold both the SMSTS and the appropriate CSCS card. In fact, completing the course can support your application for certain roles while you work toward your NVQ and card eligibility.

Conclusion

Although SMSTS tends to be an essential qualification for site managers, it’s not linked to a specific CSCS card. To obtain a CSCS card, you’ll need an NVQ, and to pass the CITB test. That said, SMSTS remains a powerful addition to your CV, and an industry-recognised sign of your commitment to safe site management.
