What Does CITB’s Increased Funding Mean?

The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) is making a significant investment of over £100 million in grants to help construction workers in the UK develop the skills they need. Starting from 1st April 2023, CITB will double its grant rates for short courses so CITB levy paying company employees can receive more core skill training, despite the rising costs. Grants up to £240 are available to employers for various courses, such as leadership and management. Last year CITB paid out more than £15 million in grants for short courses, with Mental Health and Asbestos awareness being the top two most popular courses.

Moreover, CITB has increased its grant rates for supervision and management NVQs in order to help those impacted by the Industry Accreditation card withdrawal. Qualification grants for supervision and management will be higher than before, at £1,200 and £1,500 respectively. This is considerably higher than the previous £600 funding for each of these qualifications. These increases are a response to feedback from employers indicating that increased costs are making it difficult to invest in training they need. This investment will help businesses to retain and attract more workers, while also ensuring they have an upskilled workforce that can win new work.

CITB Chief Executive Tim Balcon said: “Our increased grant rates address rising costs and support employers to secure high quality training to upskill their workforce. We’ve listened to their concerns and responded by doubling our grant rates for short courses and increasing our grant rates for specific short qualifications.”

The UK construction industry is facing a skills gap, with more than 1 million new workers needed in the next 10 years to meet the demand of major infrastructure projects. With this investment from CITB, employers can help ensure the industry has a skilled and competent workforce now and for years to come.
