Jersey Government Seeks Contractors for Major Hospital Development
Contractors are invited to submit bids for a significant new hospital development project in Jersey. The Government of Jersey has launched the bidding process for the construction of a new acute hospital at Overdale, St Helier.
While the exact cost of the project has not been disclosed, the government has allocated £710m for the construction of the hospital and the commencement of work on two additional health facilities.
Tender details were released in a contract notice published on 17 December, with a prior information notice issued on 13 December.
A main works delivery partner (MWDP) will be selected to handle the full scope of the project, including design, construction, testing, and commissioning. Site preparation, including demolition and clearance, has already been completed, and construction is expected to commence in September 2025.
A planning application for the new hospital was submitted in September 2024, and the project is expected to be completed by 2028.
The new facility will feature a range of essential services, including an accident and emergency department, operating theatres, and inpatient wards, along with additional infrastructure such as landscaped car parking.
The hospital will be a five-storey building, including a plant floor, and will offer more than 60 additional acute overnight beds compared to the existing Jersey General Hospital. The design follows a campus-style layout with a central functional “heart.”
To minimise the impact on nearby residential areas, the building’s mass has been stepped back, with the highest clinical floors being positioned two storeys lower than previously planned.
The contract outlines that the MWDP will be responsible for the full range of services, spanning pre-construction, construction, and commissioning stages through to practical completion.
The Jersey government is exploring modern construction methods to help mitigate potential delays caused by site size and accessibility challenges.
The publication of the prior information notice (PIN) marks a key step in securing the right suppliers with the expertise and experience needed for this major infrastructure project.
Interested contractors must submit their applications by 17 January 2025.
